Dow Finishes Down 200 Points, Just Above 12,000

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

The Dow continues it’s march down as it’s almost below the 12,000 point mark.  Oil prices continue to rebound from a quick drop.  Every time oil drops a little, it keeps moving to higher highs in this oil bull market.  Dow stocks are starting to look very good to value investors.  While the economy might keep them down for a few years, stocks like General Electric (GE) are paying investors 4% dividends while continuing to increase earnings during the tough part of the economic cycle.

Icahn’s Yahoo Takeover

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

After the Microsoft/Yahoo showdown that ended in Microsoft walking away from their Yahoo merger, Investor Carl Icahn has made a huge bet that he can purchase enough Yahoo stock to overthrow Yahoo’s board and sell the company to Microsoft while netting himself a huge profit from the stock purchases.  Carl Icahn has spent more than $1 billion for his over 4% stake in Yahoo’s stock.  Most of Icahn’s stock has been purchased for between $24-$25 a share after the stock dropped when Microsoft walked away from the merger.  If he can get control of Yahoo, and broker a deal between it and Microsoft, he has the possibility of profiting from it in the tune of $9-$10 per share he owns.

National Gas Price Average Hits $4 for First Time

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

For the first time in history, national gas prices have hit the average of $4/gallon.  With crude oil increasing about $16/barrel in the past two days, it doesn’t look like the gas price increases will be dropping any time soon.  Diesel fuel continues to climb as well, creating a huge chunck of inflation in our futures.  The increase in diesel fuel which is used by semi-trucks to deliver all the goods consumers use is increasing the costs for everything consumers purchase.

Oil’s Largest One Day Dollar Increase Ever!

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Oil increased over $10.50 a barrel on friday, just after a $5 increase the day before.  The two day total of over $15.50 will be seen very shortly at the gas pumps as prices continue to hurt the consumer.  The oil turmoil over the high energy costs has fueled high speculation in solar stocks.  First Solar (ticker FSLR) has a high this year over $300/share with expected earnings of less than $3/share.  Next year it’s earnings are expected around $5.75/share.  With price to earnings ratios of $50 - $100/share, you have to wonder if there is a hugh bubble starting to form in the Solar stocks.  Will the solar stocks in 2008 be the internet stocks of 2000?
